John D. Nelson, Kokhanok

My name is John D. Nelson. I was born August 19, 1960 at Kanaknak Hospital in Dillingham.  I graduated from elementary school at Kokhanok, Alaska on May 23, 1975.  During my elementary education, I became involved with local village politics as a student government representative for attendance of village council sessions, as well as being a student council president. I attended high school at Bristol Bay (Naknek) during 1975-1977 and received my high school diploma in 1979. After my education, I became a President of the Village Council. I was elected President in 1984, and I have been board chair person since then.  I have also attended the Seward AVTEC and received a certificate of Accounting I & II, Office Ocupations and Clerk Typist.

Our village was incorporated as a Borough in the late 1980s and has been an active participant in Lake & Peninsula monthly meets.  During my tenure as board chair of the village, I was also involved as a board member of BBNA and BBAHC.

Then in October of 2009, I was selected as “Citizen of the Year” with the Bristol Bay Native Corporation, and in November 2009, I was selected a commissioner of the Bristol Bay Housing Authority. In addition, I am also a commercial fisher.
